BRIEF HISTORY OF THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA The Local Government was created in Sept. 26th 1991 during IBB administration and was merged to Rivers State in 1976 by the Nasir boundary adjustment committee but, before the merger, the local Government was part of the then Imo state. Oyigbo Local Government was carved out of Khana/OYIGBO Local Government of Rivers State. The local government is made up of Asa and Ndoki people.
Oyigbo is a town and Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria. It is a satellite of Port Harcourt, lying a few kilometers to the northeast of the city. Sir Precious Oforji was elected Chairman of the Oyigbo LGA in 2008. Sunday Elechi Oforji was Chief in Oyigbo until his death in July 2009.
Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) operates an oil well in the LGA. The Oyigbo people are mostly of Igbo extraction.
