Strike: Anambra hikes university fees by 300% PDF Print E-mail

The Anambra State government has decided to jack up the fees payable by students of the state-owned Anambra State University (ANSU) by 300 per cent as part of measures to meet the demands of striking lecturers of the institution.

The state Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Professor Chinyere Okunna, gave this indication on Wednesday while speaking with newsmen at a stakeholders’ meeting on 2011 participatory budget forum and collection of application for 2011 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) conditional grants.

According to Professor Okunna, students of ANSU paid the lowest fees in the country, adding that, “the proposed school fees would not be less than N100,000 if the state must meet up with the striking lecturers’ demands.

“There is no how we can meet the lecturers’ demands without increasing fees in our university. Students of our university cannot continue to pay N36,000 with these lecturers’ demands. It’s not feasible. We must reasonably increase school fees to meet the lecturers’ demand,” she said.
